Who is visa 482 for?

The Skills In Demand (SID) Visa (482) is the final step in the temporary employer sponsored visa process after the Standard Business Sponsorship (SBS) and the Skills In Demand Visa Nomination. The name and details of the visa applicant would have been provided to Home Affairs through the nomination application process. The SID Visa (482) also has three streams with specific requirements as explained below.

Specialist skills stream

The Specialist Skills Stream is for highly skilled persons who will be nominated to work in a position that will attract salary that is at least equal to the  Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT). It is valid for a period of 4 years.

Requirements for the Specialist Skills Stream

The visa applicant:

  • can be of any age
  • can be in or outside Australia
  • has been nominated by an employer (business) that has an approved Standard Business Sponsor (SBS) status
  • nominates an occupation under one of ANZSCO Groups 1,2,4,5 or 6
  • has the skills and experience to perform the tasks of the nominated occupation
  • have worked in the nominated occupation for at least 1 year
  • will be offered salary that is at least equal to the  Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT).
  • has obtained a positive skills assessment if this is a mandatory requirement for their nominated occupation
  • have at least Competent English.

Core skills Stream (CSS)

The Core Skills Stream is for highly-skilled workers who will be sponsored by an Australian employer but their salary is unlikely to be at the level of the Specialist Stream Income Threshold. The occupations available under the Core Skills Pathway are listed in the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL)

Requirements for the Core Skills Stream

The visa applicant:

  • can be of any age
  • can be in or outside Australia
  • has been nominated by an employer (business) that has an approved Standard Business Sponsor (SBS) status
  • nominates an occupation that is on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL)

labour agreement Stream (lA)

The Labour Agreement Stream (LA) operates similar to the Labour Agreement Stream under the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) Visa (186) and allows the visa applicant to be processed under an arrangement (‘Agreement’) previously negotiated with the Government. This stream is commonly used by employer groups or in situations where it would be impracticable for the visa applicant to meet the standard conditions set out under the Specialist Skills Stream or the Core Skills Stream explained above. If an agreement is reached between the employer group and the Government that certain concessions can be offered, these are written into the Labour Agreement.

Requirements for the Labour Agreement Stream

The visa applicant:

  • can be of any age
  • can be in or outside Australia
  • has been nominated by an employer (business) that is a party or signatory to the Labour Agreement under which the visa will be processed
  • nominates an occupation that is listed in the Labour Agreement
  • has the skills and experience to perform the tasks of the nominated occupation
  • have worked in the nominated occupation for at least 1 year
  • will be offered salary that is at least equal to the amount agreed in the Labour Agreement
  • have held an employer sponsored temporary visa (visa 482 or its predecessor visa 457) for at least 2 years in the last 3 years
  • they have been genuinely performing the tasks related to their nominated occupation
  • have at least Competent English, unless a concession for English has been provided in the Labour Agreement.
