What is standard business sponsorship?

In order to sponsor a worker for the Skills In Demand (SID) Visa (842), the Australian employer needs to be first approved by the Government as a Standard Business Sponsor (SBS). The SBS approval is the first-step in a three-step process where the second step is the Skills In Demand (SID) Nomination and the final step is the SID Visa (482) for the employee. Once approved, the SBS status is generally valid for a period of 5 years, allowing the business to employ multiple overseas workers.

What are the requirements for a SBS?

The Temporary Resident Transition Stream (TRTS) of the 186 Visa is a streamlined pathway for overseas workers who have already worked for their sponsoring employer. The requirements below apply to the employer (sponsoring business) as well as the employee (visa applicant). 

Requirements for business

  • is operating actively and lawfully in Australia
  • there is no adverse information about the business that may impact the suitability for a SBS.

What documentation is required for a SBS application?

The documents required for a Standard Business Sponsorship (SBS) application relate mainly to the first requirement listed above i.e. active and lawful operation 

These would typically include:

  • business registration documents
  • documents to show operation of the business i.e. evidence of delivering the goods or services that the business was set up for
  • financial documents to show ongoing concern
  • other documents related to assets and liabilities
  • business plan etc.

Fees and charges

As at 1 July 2024, the Home Affairs fees for a Standard Business Sponsorship (SBS) application is $420.
