Frequently asked questions

Which visas are included in the family stream?

The family stream visas are for individuals seeking to migrate to Australia on the basis of family ties with an Australian citizen or permanent resident. These include partners, parents, children and some other categories such as aged dependent or last remaining relative.

How many visas are set per year for family visas?

Generally, the Family Stream of Australia’s Migration Program is a demand driven category which means that there no limit on how many applications can be lodged in a program (financial) year. In reality however, the Department of Home Affairs sets notional allocations on how many visas will be granted in the year. This means that if application numbers exceed the allocation, the pipeline of unfinalised applications will grow.

For the year 2024-25 (1 July to 30m June), the Family Program allocation is 52,500 visas which includes 40,500 partner visas, 8,500 parent visas, 3,000 child visas and 500 other family visas.
