Who is visa 590 for?
If you are a parent, legal guardian or relative of a Student visa holder who is either under 18 years old, or has a physical or other need to be accompanied by an adult, then you will need to apply for the Student Guardian Visa (590). for the duration of your study.
What are visa 590 requirements?
As the visa applicant, you must:
- be either the student’s parent or legal guardian or a relative who is at least 21 years old
- be able to provide accommodation, general welfare and other support to the student
- genuinely intend to reside in Australia with the student
- not have any dependent children under six years old
- have made adequate arrangements for health insurance during your stay in Australia
- have access to sufficient funds to cover return airfares and 12 months of living costs for you and the student, as well as the student’s tuition costs.
In addition to these requirements, the student whom you intend to accompany to Australia must:
- either be under 18 years old or have reasons for requiring you to reside with them in Australia
- genuinely intend to reside with you in Australia
What documents will I need?
The documents required for the Student Guardian Visa (590) will need to demonstrate:
- your relationship with the student, or proof of guardianship
- proof of their age (under 18 years) or evidence of physical need
- your access to funds
- your genuine intention to only accompany the student for the duration of their study
- other reasons can be grouped under the following categories:
- evidence of health insurance.
Fees and charges
As at 1 July 2024, the Home Affairs fees for this visa are as below:
- primary applicant – A$ 1,600
- dependent over 18 years of age – A$ 1,190
- dependent under 18 years of age – A$ 390
In addition, there will be fees associated with undertaking health examination, English testing and obtaining police clearance (if required).
