Who is visa 500 for?

This visa may be for you if you are planning to undertake full-time education and training in Australia as an international student. You must enrol with an Australian education provider for a course that is registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for International Students (CRICOS). Once granted, the visa will let you stay in Australia for the duration of your study.

What are visa 500 requirements?

As an applicant for a student visa you must:

  • enrol with an Australian education provider as a full-time student, and obtain written confirmation of this enrolment
  • genuinely intend to complete the relevant period of study in Australia
  • have the required level of English language proficiency (unless exempt)
  • have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the period of your intended stay in Australia
  • have access to sufficient funds to cover your return airfares, tuition fees and the cost of living in Australia, as well as costs required for any dependents included in your application.

What documents will I need?

The documents required for the Student Visa (500) can be grouped under the following categories:

Identity and other documents

These documents would include birth certificate, passport, national ID, proof of address etc. 

Other documents

These documents would include:

  • evidence of enrolment in the study
  • evidence of financial ability for the first 12 months of the study
  • evidence of required level of English proficiency
  • evidence of health insurance.

Fees and charges

As at 1 July 2024, the Home Affairs fees for this visa are as below:

  • primary applicant – A$ 1,600
  • dependent over 18 years of age – A$ 1,190
  • dependent under 18 years of age – A$ 390

In addition, there will be fees associated with undertaking health examination, English testing  and obtaining police clearance (if required).
