Visitor Visa (600)

This visa may be for you if you are planning to travel to Australia for tourism or business purposes, or to visit family. There are five (5) different streams within the Visitor Visa (600) depending on the purpose of the visit. The most common streams are explained below with requirements.

The Tourist Stream is for you if you intend to travel to Australia for a holiday or to visit family or friends.

As the visa applicant in the Tourist Stream, you:

• can be in Australia or overseas at the time of application
• must genuinely intend to visit Australia for a holiday, to see family and/or friends, or for other purposes that are not related to business/work or medical treatment
• have access to sufficient funds to have someone who will support you in terms of living arrangements and costs whilst you are in Australia
• will depart Australia before the expiry of your visa.

The Sponsored Family Stream of the Visitor Visa is for you if you intend to travel to Australia to visit a family member and that family member will formally sponsor you. Under this stream the Department of Home Affairs may ask your sponsor to pay a security bond as a guarantee that you will return home after the visit. If you do not return before the expiry of your visa, the bond will be forfeited. a Visitor Visa granted in the Sponsored Family Stream will also have the No Further Stay condition imposed. 

As the visa applicant in the Sponsored Family Stream, you:

• can be in Australia or overseas at the time of application
• must have a partner, parent, child, brother, sister, grandparent, grandchild, aunt, uncle, niece, or nephew who will sponsor you
• must genuinely intend to visit Australia for a holiday, to see family and/or friends, or for other purposes that are not related to business/work or medical treatment
• have access to sufficient funds to have someone who will support you in terms of living arrangements and costs whilst you are in Australia
• will depart Australia before the expiry of your visa.

The Business Visitor Stream of the Visitor Visa is for you if you intend to travel to Australia for business reasons such as to negotiate a business deal, take part in a conference or attend a trade fair.

As the visa applicant in the Business Visitor Stream, you:

• can be in Australia or overseas at the time of application
• must genuinely intend to visit Australia for a business purpose
• should have access to sufficient funds in terms of living arrangements and costs whilst you are in Australia
• will need to provide evidence of the business purpose for which you intend to travel to Australia
• will depart Australia before the expiry of your visa.

As at 1 July 2024, the Home Affairs fees for this visa are as below:

• if the applicant is outside Australia – A$ 195
• if the applicant is in Australia – A$ 490

It is not possible to add family members to a Visitor Visa (600) application so each person must make their own separate application.
