Who is visa 101 for?

This visa is for you if you are child of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen, are currently overseas and looking to migrate to Australia on a permanent basis to live with your parents. 

What are visa 101 requirements

Applicant

As the visa applicant, you must:

  • be the child of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen
  • be single (i.e. not married, engaged or in a de facto relationship)
  • be under 25 years old at the time that your application is lodged
  • if you are between 18 and 24 years old, you must be a full-time student AND financially dependent upon your sponsor, OR you must have a disability that prevents you from working
  • be outside Australia at the time of application.

Parent Sponsor

The parent who is sponsoring your visa application must:

  • be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen
  • be your biological parent (although an adoptive parent or step-parent MAY be eligible in certain circumstances)
  • be 18 years or older at the time that your application is lodged (or have a spouse or de facto partner who is eligible to sponsor your application)
  • if you are under 18 years old, have:
  • the sole legal right to decide where you can live OR
  • have a statutory declaration from any other person who has the legal right to decide where you can live, granting permission for you to migrate to Australia OR
  • a valid court order permitting your permanent removal from your home country
  • NOT have been convicted of (or have an outstanding charge for) an offence against a child (this requirement also applies to your parent’s spouse or de facto partner, if relevant)

What documents will I need?

At the current time, Child visa applications cannot be lodged via ImmiAccount and must be lodged as a paper application. The documents required for the Child (Migrant) Visa (101) can be grouped under the following categories:

Forms

Some forms such as a Form 80, sponsorship form and Form 956A may be required in addition to the paper visa application

Identity and other documents

These documents would include birth certificate, passport, national ID, evidence of name changes, proof of address and evidence of any previous relationships etc. 

Other documents

These documents would include:

  • documents to demonstrate the parental relationship with your sponsoring parent
  • evidence of residence status of your sponsoring parent
  • evidence of your enrolment in full-time study (if between the age of 18 and 24 years)
  • evidence that you are financially dependent on your sponsoring parent.

Fees and charges

As at 1 July 2024, the Home Affairs fees for this visa are as below:

  • primary applicant – A$ 3,140
  • dependent over 18 years of age – A$ 1,570
  • dependent under 18 years of age – A$ 790

In addition, there will be fees associated with undertaking health examination and obtaining police clearance (if required).
